Dither with Floret Loret

Ya’ll remember Floret Loret from issue nine, right? You may also recall him as one of our 5 administrators on our community or perhaps as our A&R for our network submissions. Either way, no matter how you know him or whether you are just discovering, don’t dither from our exclusive interview below.

Floret Loret is back for his second Phuture Collective exclusive and we couldn’t be more excited! His growth as an artist over the last year has been monumental and his ability to stay omnipresent in the electronic music scene is such an inspiration for us all. He’s now wrapping up our biggest issue to date with his track “Dither”. Let’s take a peek into his thoughts!

Phuture
: Back so soon for your second release! We’ve been taking note of your increasing sound design arsenal and remain impressed after listening to “Dither”. Explain some of the inspiration, techniques or samples used for the big industrial sounds in this track.

Floret Loret: Thank you so much for inviting me back! The track dither was inspired by previous tracks I have made in the past. It means to be indecisive. I had a hard time trying to figure out where to go with this one and ended up with 20-30 different versions of this song. Instead of scraping it, I kept pushing it. The sounds you heard are a bunch of drum loops that I made with various sample packs being processed through a big chain of audio effects over and over again. I start with a rhythm first then layer it with the post-processed bounced audio of it. Some effects that I used were Ableton’s grain delay, simple delay, corpus, erosion, saturation and auto-pan.

Phuture: Recently you’ve received big love from Electric Mantis on your remix of his track “Faced”. Can you give some advice to the people looking to start a connection with their favorite producers?

Floret Loret: In all honesty, just hit them up if they have contact information. If their work inspired you to create something, send that to them. I am sure they will appreciate it. I can’t guarantee that they will respond though!

Phuture: If you lived in a world where you could only have 1 hour a day of free time. How would you break up that hour?

Floret Loret: 30 minute nap, 30 minute production.

Phuture: We know you got stacks on stacks of them sample packs. How do you organize them and find the right things in each pack?

Floret Loret: I just have a folder that says “Music Production” and it has all my sample packs into one, organized by artist’s name. For picking the right thing – it all depends what I want to create that day, if it’s something chill, relaxing, melodic, I normally don’t go too crazy with samples and mainly stick with percussive elements. If it’s something wonky, experimental, heavy, I throw everything I can in there and have it run through a bunch of audio presets that I made in Ableton.

Phuture: Why does Floret Loret make music?

Floret Loret: For one, it’s really fun. I first started this out as a way to cope with my emotions and thoughts. After the first year of doing that, I really didn’t want it to stop, so I kept trying to get better. In my music, I really want to portray my thoughts, emotions, and adventures. I like telling stories. I want to look back a couple years from now and have a wide range of music that portrays certain episodes of my life that people can relate to.

Phuture: You have an big open building space free of rent for life. What would you put in it? Who would you have in it? How would you use it?

Floret Loret: I would have my girlfriend and two dogs there with me, along with all my music equipment in a separate room, and a big ol’ espresso machine to keep me alive/sane. I would just enjoy being with them for the rest of my life while slowly building a studio. By the time I’m 40, I want to have a big enough studio just like deadmau5’s, filled with synths and fun gadgets.

____________________________________________________________________

Phuture: Aside from anything music related, what would be your dream job?

Floret Loret: I want to open up a coffee shop in Vancouver, BC. Vancouver is amazing and I can snowboard on the free time.

Phuture: We can’t thank you enough for always putting out an unfaltering positive aura. Where does this positivity come from and how do you keep it up in the harder times?

Floret Loret: I told myself when I first started producing music “seriously” that I would have a positive outlook on it. I am not gonna lie, I was not optimistic at the start of it; I would have self doubt and most of the time compare myself to others, which is something no one should do. You really have to take yourself out of everyone else’s shoes and realize that your path in music, art, or whatever career you’re in, will always be different from everyone else. Music is my hobby and I didn’t want to give it up, so I had to set all my pessimistic thoughts aside and start looking at the good things that it was bringing me.

Phuture: As always we got to wrap up this interview with your top 3 producers and any other shoutouts 🙂 Can we get some 2018 plans for Floret Loret as well?

Floret Loret: 2018 plans? Keep making more music and hopefully write an EP this year. I want to play a show too, that would be interesting. ONLY 3?! Fine. My favorite producers who are under 1k that everyone needs to check out:
