How do you get to know the hermit?

Today we get to meet the hermit.  who comes to us from somewhere in the ocean. we’re eager to see where this artists goes in the months to come. He’s got a way of giving you the unexpected with each of his tracks. The second halves of his tracks he treats with care, as if he means to purposely surprise you :).  Check out what we mean by listening to his track ‘Cymbopogon’ as part of issue six | LEMONGRASS.

Our interview with the hermit was curated by The Flourish of the phuture collective team.

Interview with the hermit:

phuture: Cymbopogon is amazing!  Could you tell us a little bit about the inspiration behind that track?

the hermit:  For a while I was listening to a TON of experimental jazz/trap, and one of my biggest inspirations there was Swindail. He makes some really sick jazz beats with Rhodes, and I actually used his piano samples he included in his pack. Then the switch up at the end was actually hugely inspired by Herzeloyde’s “ickybod”. Mad swing.

phuture: Whats your live setup like?

the hermit: : I have a MIDI keyboard, but I rarely use it. I play keys really well on my computer’s keyboard alone, so I just do that. Helps me be as portable as possible.
__________________________________________________________________________

phuture: What are your goals when it comes to music? Where do you wish for it to take you? Why?

the hermit: My goal is to share my feelings with others, and I’d absolutely love to command a dancefloor / stage one day soon. I love making people move, and that’s my main goal, as well as sharing deep emotions with them.
__________________________________________________________________________

phuture: Who are some of your inspirations behind your sound/style?

the hermit: An odd mix of Mr. Bill, Tennyson, whereisalex, Swindail, Oshi, Herzeloyde, Flume, Cashmere Cat, and countless others that I couldn’t even begin to list. Anything I listen to inspires me, even country music.

__________________________________________________________________________

phuture: If you could choose one artist to work alongside in the studio, who would it be and why?

the hermit: : Drake so I can make some swanky giggy trap shit and sell my soul for riches so everybody’s straight.
__________________________________________________________________________

phuture:What are your musical motivations? What keeps you going when you’re feeling uninspired?

the hermit: Goodnews……badnews
__________________________________________________________________________

phuture: Can you share a little of your production routine with us?

the hermit: : I generally start with some chords laid down in a basic saw wave synth, then i work on making that synth sound better. Then I add some drums, more layers of synths, and build up some rhythm. I generally make all of my synths myself, although lately I’ve been using a lot more presets because it allows me to focus way more on creating the actual song.

__________________________________________________________________________

phuture: What can we expect from The Hermit in the coming months and 2017?

the hermit: :I have a LOT coming! I’ve been staying under the radar perfecting my craft, but its time that I start releasing some real music. I’ll be releasing lots of music in 2017, along with playing clubs and shows, posting tutorials, and selling sample packs and mixing/mastering services. 5 years in secret, and now I’m leaving my shell.

__________________________________________________________________________

phuture:Do you ever get writers block? If so what do you do?

the hermit: All the time! I just take a break for a day. I try to avoid even listening to other people’s music during this time, like I spend a lot of time in nature and just listening to silence. After a day or two, I usually can come back in.

__________________________________________________________________________

phuture:  When you start a track do you know what you want as an end result, or do you just keep experimenting until you find the right vibe?

the hermit: : ‘m really good at audiating, which is the ability to literally hear music in my head. I can play entirely original complex songs in my head from scratch. The difficulty is actually making it on my computer, which I’m getting better at. So yeah, I usually have an idea to begin with, but 80% of what actually comes out happens as I go. It sort of writes itself for me.

__________________________________________________________________________

phuture:  Any word on a possible album soon?

the hermit: : Definitely. I have a lot coming out soon, once I get it organized and mastered I will be releasing multiple albums. Watch for them <3 Much love, guys. <3
