Feeling Numbness with Noer the Boy

Before the calm becomes the storm, it must relinquish itself to the great unknown. Numbness is the culmination of serenity and chaos, a wholly inclusive experience of both the calm and the storm, an unending question. A question that can only be conjured by Noer the Boy.

Interview curated by Michael of the Phuture Collective team.

phuture : So great to have you on another issue Noer! Your track ‘Numbness’ is unlike anything we’ve heard from you to this date. Granted, your productions continue to push boundaries so this isn’t the first time we’ve been caught off guard with a new style from you. What went into this track, and how/why is it so ‘different’ than your other pieces?

Noer : “Numbness” came together after a pretty severe period of writers block. My mindset going into this song was to just make something fun and different. I’m a big fan of OG footwork music and went for that kind of style and surprised myself with this one. Big shout out to my homie Zero Tep for coming over and contributing to the final version!

phuture : Since September you’ve had releases on innovative labels like DIVISION & Don’t Die At Work. You’ve been a part of massive mixtapes like Woolymammoth’s Nova Jaunt ‘ and BLEEP BLOOP’s ‘PV500‘. Also, not that we were stalking you or anything, but you were also an essential element of both um… & X&G’s remix albums. Do you put effort into continuing to branch out, or is it coming naturally?

Noer : Everything I do with music I do as naturally as possible. For me, my music life and my personal life are so intertwined that doing something I don’t actually vibe with is off the table.

phuture : Take us through a typical production session. Are there any routines you must follow before you can get in the ‘groove’?

Noer : Grind, grind, grind…take a little break, then keep grinding. It really comes down to sheer perseverance.

phuture : Last we spoke you had just moved to Portland. How is life after the switch, now that you’ve had several months to try and adjust? What’s the biggest difference with Oregon in comparison to living in your home state of Wisconsin?

Noer : Portland is a fantastic city, so glad to call it my home now. The biggest difference is probably how deeply rooted artistry is here and how differences are celebrated. I’ll always love Wisconsin but I really enjoy it here in the PNW.

phuture : A giant genie appears and  says “If you rub my belly I will grant you any one wish to make your dreams come true.” Assuming you aren’t against giant genie belly rubs, what do you wish for?

Noer : That everyone could experience unadulterated happiness.

phuture : Describe to us what life would be like without music.

Noer : Miserable.

phuture : Do you have anything planned this spring/summer that we can look forward to?

Noer: You’ll hear a lot of new Noer this spring/summer. I have an EP coming out early April as well as track I did with my dude Bleep Bloop. But what I’m most stoked about is my debut LP coming soon…more info to come on that later.

phuture : Name 3 artists under 2,000 followers who deserve more recognition.

Noer : Little Snake, Former, S280F…there’s so much unheard talent on the internet!
