phuture: Hey there Sir Nicolas! Welcome aboard phuture collective <3. Tell the world a bit about yourself!
Sir Nicolas: Hi there, fam. I’m 24 years old and I currently live in Seattle. I’m originally from New Jersey, but I moved out here in 2015 to pursue my music career. I started producing when I was about 13 or 14 years old.

phuture: What got you into music ;)? What keeps you going?
Sir Nicolas: I got into production after first discovering Flying Lotus and J Dilla through adult swim bumps. I was already listening to producers like Alchemist, DJ Premier, and Just Blaze from rapping, but the type of sampling and the sounds used in both FlyLo and Dilla’s productions brought a rush of inspiration to me. Ever since I got started, all I think about is music and I don’t ever see me giving up on doing what I love.

phuture: What instruments do you play? How long have you been playing music?
Sir Nicolas: I play the drums, the bass, and the keyboard. I’ve been playing the drums and keyboard for about 4 or 5 years and I taught myself the bass about 3 years ago.

phuture: How long have you been with/following phuture collective?
Sir Nicolas: I started following phuture collective after the release of issue four. I fell in love with “Hidden Quartz” by Pacific Patterns and started diving into more of the music that they released. I respect everything they stand for and the hustle and grind that they put in to what they do. I’m honored to have my song released with them and hope we continue to work together in the future.

phuture: Where does your heritage lie? Everyone experiences culture differently, yet culture is what brings us all closer together, especially with music. Would you say that culture has had a positive role in what you do?
Sir Nicolas: I’m half Jamaican and half Chilean. I’d say that my Jamaican culture has reflected in my music more than my Chilean side because I was raised on a lot of reggae from my mother and her family and funk and soul from my father. I did listen to Spanish music, but not as frequently as reggae.

phuture: What is the craziest thing that has ever happened to you, that you’re comfortable telling potentially thousands of people?
Sir Nicolas: Hmm…I’ve had so much crazy shit happen to me in the past year alone that its kind of hard to pick just one. Here’s one from high school though. It was the first time I got black out drunk and it was at a party at some kid’s mansion in a rich neighborhood. Probably one of the biggest parties I’ve ever been to. At least 150 people in the backyard and driveway at one point. Anyway, at some point during the night, a fight broke out in the backyard and turned into an all-out brawl. I had to punch my way out and went to the front yard to find my friends. The cops came and I starting running in the street, but my legs gave out and i scraped my hands and knees up pretty bad. My friend Anthony saw me, literally threw me on his back, and ran to our friend’s house that we were spending the night at. Us and a bunch of other people must have been ducking the cops through various backyards for at least two hours before we finally made it back. My friends threw me in the bathroom and told me to clean up, but I was super confused. I looked in the mirror and realized that I had blood all over my shirt from the brawl and blood on my jeans from when I fell. It was definitely one of the craziest nights I’ve ever had, haha.

phuture: Have you ever used any psychedelic or mind altering substances, either to influence your sound, or otherwise? What are your thoughts on psychedelics?
Sir Nicolas: Not while making music. Just for listening to it. I do enjoy smoking weed while crafting songs though. I tend to come up with more experimental ideas after smoking than I would while sober. I think psychedelics are great and recommend them to anyone looking to expand their mind.
