Phuture: The man, the myth, the clown, the legend – Pacific Patterns!!! It’s been FIVE years since our last release together, which is crazy. We’re excited to learn what you’ve been upto, what’s ahead & also dig into ‘Spaz Out’. 

We’ll start things off with what you had for lunch!!

Pacific Patterns: Yesterday I ate five chicken strips with a tiny bit of ranch. I would say this is one of my more memorable lunches lately.

Phuture: If you were given 50 lemons, 25 limes & an empty egg carton, what would you do?

Pacific Patterns: To start, I would throw all of the lemons in the trash, except for one. Then I would start cutting up the limes. I would fill up the egg carton with lime slices and go around to everyone and ask if they wanted a slice. Then when the limes were all dispatched I would cut the one lemon in half and append each one to your nipples. I’d fire up the video camera and start hitting them with drum sticks to the beat of the song and call it a day.

Phuture: Based on recent social media buzz, it appears clowns have become a totem for not only your persona but perhaps your music as well. Tell us more ?.

Pacific Patterns: It all started when I started really listening to dubstep back in 2018. The honks, the shrieks and hilarious shouting could only make me think of one thing, clowns. I realized that DJ’s are adult clowns. They are hired to entertain people at parties. They say, “hey everyone, gather around! I’m going to do something.” They have their standard attire. Instead of rainbow wigs, red noses and white face paint they have fanny packs, dressed in all black with minimal white logos of various artists and labels on their caps and t’s. Last century’s interpretation of clowns is outdated and I’m just trying to bring to light that it’s an archetype that has always existed, and will never go away. We need to accept the idea that it’s okay to be ridiculous sometimes, and rewrite what it means to be a clown.

Phuture: Let’s talk about ‘Spaz Out’! What was the idea behind this track? Please describe the emotions that went into this 🙂

Pacific Patterns: Similar to what I said about being ridiculous. I started making this song by pitching up and down a sample of a clown horn. The squeak had a pretty interesting timbre and stands well on its own without knowing the origin of the sample. This song is more of a call to action. Asking people to be goofy and allow things of ridiculous nature to flow through them from time to time. I felt the term “spaz out” reflected the way that outlandish ideas spontaneously occur.

Phuture: What roles do friendship, community, & love play in your life? Both musically & personally.

Pacific Patterns: A lot of my friendship, community, & love has been built around music. I’d say the main reason I create music and go to shows is to experience moments with others. When you know the people around you love the same thing it’s much easier to connect with them.

Phuture: Which 3 producers have inspired you the most throughout your musical journey thus far?

Pacific Patterns: #1 is Flying Lotus. I saw him on a whim back in 2009 before I knew anything about electronic music. Half way through his set I thought “This is what I’m doing now.” And he’s continued to uphold that idea by continuously releasing music that pushes his own boundaries of creativity. 

#2 G jones. The level of excitement and creativity that goes into all of his songs is unmatched.

Phuture: What advice do you have for upcoming producers trying to make a buzz / impact in the scene?

Pacific Patterns: I would say pay attention to how you feel when you’re creating something. If it makes you feel excited, then there is a high chance some people will feel the same way.

Pacific Patterns: Gas or brakes? 

Phuture: I like a little bit of both but lately i’ve been more of a brakes guy. Historically i’ve been more of a gas guy but it’s nice just slowing down more these days :). I still swear by a lil bit of gas & a lil bit of brakes tho.

Phuture: What does the next year look like for ya? Any album / shows / streams / travel plans being put together?

Pacific Patterns: Well, I have a lot of music to release. I’m happy to play a set here and there, but mostly just creating. Just found out I got my burning man ticket so I’m going for the first time. Should be wild. Creating and pushing myself as an artist and developer.
