Interview curated by Michael of the Phuture Collective team.
Phuture: Hey m-cubed!! Big warm welcome to Phuture Collective :). We’ve had our ears on you for quite some time, so it’s great to get a chance to get to know you! Tell the world a bit about who you are, and what you had for breakfast.
m-cubed: Yo! My name is Mike Stellman, known for my project m-cubed. I live in Austin, Texas and I just had too many cashews for breakfast.

Phuture: Let’s take a walk through ‘Steamy’. This is really something else. From the attention to detail, to the choice of sounds, to the overall emotion that’s transparent throughout. What inspirations were behind this? Anything particular going on in your life at the time which helped this creation?
m-cubed: I actually wrote this one a while back, it was initially gonna be a part of this whole EP thing that focused on duality and like intensity of emotion, cuz I was super up and down mentally. Nowadays I’m a little more stable on the up so I’d added some more cheerful and playful ideas and made the track more consistent and smooth. I think my fave aspect of the track is the off kilter background percussion.

Phuture: How long have you been producing & what’s your setup like?
m-cubed: I’ve been producing since 2011ish, my setup is super simple right now, just Live (w/ Max) and my trusty Yamaha dx21 that I’ve had since I was literally 10 years old.

Phuture: You are given three wishes. Besides asking for more wishes, what do you wish for?
m-cubed: Financial stability for all my artist buddies, cheap commercial space travel, to never need to poop or fart again.

Phuture: Take us through a typical day in your shoes.
m-cubed: Wake up, write, yoga/workout, work (at a cafe as a server), ideally close out w/ a swim and then write some more and hang with my gf or roommates (who are also my bandmates)

Phuture: If your music was a food, what food would it be?
m-cubed: PB&J w/ a side of chips & salsa

Phuture: Looking back the last couple years of your work, what accomplishments are you most proud of? What else would you like to accomplish by the end of this year?
m-cubed: I’m super proud of some of the work I’ve released on Spotify that was featured on their official playlists, that was real exciting.
Just looking to keep writing, improving mix and master skills, and do some road trips/more live shows
